Malicious Software

This problem includes viruses, spyware, adware, trojan horses, worms, rootkits and any other kind of software designed to harm you or your computer without your consent.

Why Does It Happen?

You could get malware anytime you browse the Internet, download an email attachment, access another computer through a network, or when you plug in a flash drive that was previously plugged into an infected machine. These days, by far the most common way to get a virus or malware is from using programs like LimeWire or BitTorrent. To see some of the most common symptoms of malware read our article “How To Know If Your Computer Has A Virus.”

Make sure that you have an updated antivirus protection program on all your computers. And don't forget to make use of the Windows firewall, or a third party firewall, with some good antispyware protection if it is not included with your antivirus. Even if you do have all of these installed, stop using peer-to-peer programs like LimeWire or Bitorrent, because an antivirus will always by-pass all the downloads that you authorize. That also applies to firewalls. Don't have an antivirus? Download Microsoft's Security Essentials
